DESCRIPTION:Winter Camping & Travel Course\n(A Guided by Adventure Learning Experience) \nOverview\nWinter changes everything — the landscape\, the pace\, and the way we prepare. This course is designed to help you step confidently into cold-weather travel\, with the knowledge and skills to keep yourself safe\, warm\, and having fun. \nOver the course of one classroom day\, one field day\, and one overnight\, you’ll learn how to plan\, pack\, travel\, and camp in winter conditions. We’ll cover essential safety topics\, layering systems\, snowshoe techniques\, navigation\, and how to create a comfortable winter camp. \nThis course is beginner-friendly and perfect for anyone curious about expanding their adventure season\, preparing for backcountry travel\, or simply learning how to enjoy the snow safely. \nAll instruction\, guided snowshoeing\, and group gear is included. This is a three part workshop. The first session will be held via zoom on Tuesday February 3rd at 6:30pm. The second day will be a field day (location TBA but within the south Okanagan) and held on February 8th from 9am – 3pm. The final portion will be an overnight winter camping trip again held in the South Okanagan – Saturday February 28th – Sunday February 29th. \n\n\n\nCourse Structure\nDay 1 – Classroom Learning (short session either done in person or via zoom)\nLocation: Indoor session (with gear demos)Focus: Preparation & Planning \n\n\nWelcome and introductions \n\n\nUnderstanding winter environments: cold management\, weather awareness\, and terrain \n\n\nClothing & gear systems: how to layer effectively and choose the right winter kit \n\n\nSnowshoe and pole selection\, fitting\, and basic maintenance \n\n\nNavigation basics\, trip planning\, and group communication \n\n\nPacking for winter: what to bring (and what not to) \n\n\nHands-on demo: layering system\, snowshoe fitting\, and winter pack organization \n\nDay 2 – Field Day\nLocation: Local trail or accessible backcountry areaFocus: Movement & Travel Skills \n\n\nOn-trail snowshoeing techniques (flat\, uphill\, downhill\, traversing) \n\n\nRoute finding & terrain reading in snowy conditions \n\n\nStaying warm and dry while moving \n\n\nRecognizing and avoiding winter hazards (tree wells\, overhanging snow\, open water\, avalanche awareness) \n\n\nTeam travel\, pacing\, and group decision-making \n\n\nWinter cooking demo \n\n\nOptional: Field practice with map and compass in snow-covered terrain \n\nDay 3 – Winter Overnight\nLocation: Field-based winter campFocus: Campcraft & Confidence \n\n\nSite selection: wind protection\, snow base\, and safety \n\n\nBuilding and anchoring a snow camp \n\n\nTent setup\, ventilation\, and insulation for cold nights \n\n\nCooking in the cold: stove safety\, melting snow\, and meal prep \n\n\nNight warmth and comfort strategies \n\n\nMorning breakdown and gear management \n\n\nGroup debrief\, Q&A\, and next steps \n\n\n\nWhat You’ll Learn\n\n\nHow to prepare for and plan winter trips \n\n\nClothing and gear systems that actually work in cold conditions \n\n\nBasic snowshoe travel and route finding \n\n\nWinter camp setup and stove safety \n\n\nRecognizing and managing environmental hazards \n\n\nConfidence to extend your adventure season safely and sustainably \n\nAvalanche awareness\n\n\nWho This Course Is For\nThis course is designed for beginners and those who’ve done some hiking or camping but want to learn how to travel and camp safely in winter. No prior snowshoeing or camping experience required — just a sense of adventure and readiness to learn! \n\nWhat’s Included\n\n\n1 classroom session \n\n\n1 field day \n\n\n1 overnight winter camp \n\n\nInstruction from certified and experienced guides \n\n\nGroup safety equipment and demonstration gear \n\n\nParticipants provide: personal clothing\, footwear\, snowshoes (rentals available)\, and personal camping gear. \nCost is $249 plus gst.
